Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) Overview

The Board will not pre-approve any specific continuing education. Please refer to the section of the Board Rules respective to your license type listed below for continuing education guidelines.

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) 

• 40 CEHs total required per renewal 
  • 3 CEHs must be completed in ethics per renewal 
  • 6 CEHs must be completed in diagnosis per renewal 
  • Board Approved Supervisor Only: 3 CEHs must be completed in Supervision per renewal 
  • LPCs previously approved to practice Telehealth: 3 CEHs must be completed in Telehealth per renewal

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) 

• 40 CEHs total required per renewal 
  • 3 CEHs must be completed in Marriage & Family Therapy ethics per renewal 
  • 6 CEHs must be completed in diagnosis per renewal 
  • Board Approved Supervisor Only: 6 CEHs must be completed in Supervision every 4 years 
  • LMFTs previously approved to practice Telehealth: 3 CEHs must be completed in Telehealth per renewal

Provisional Licensed Professional Counselors (PLPCs) 

• 20 CEHs total required per renewal 
  • 1.5 CEHs must be completed in ethics per renewal 
  • 1.5 CEHs must be completed in diagnosis per renewal 
  • PLPCs previously approved to practice Telehealth: 3 CEHs must be completed in Telehealth per renewal

Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (PLMFTs) 

• 20 CEHs total 
  • 1.5 CEHs must be completed in Marriage & Family Therapy ethics per renewal 
  • 1.5 CEHs must be completed in diagnosis per renewal 
  • PLMFTs previously approved to practice Telehealth: 3 CEHs must be completed in Telehealth per renewal

Continuing education that has been approved by the following organizations will be accepted by the Board: 

• For LPCs and PLPCs:
  • American Counseling Association (ACA), its divisions, regions, and state branches
  • Louisiana Counseling Association (LCA) 
  • National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)  

• For LMFTs and PLMFTs:
  • American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and its regional or state divisions  
  • Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (LAMFT)

Note:  Continuing education completed synchronously (live, interactive, in real time) is considered in person CEHs.
